How to Find the Best Wi-Fi Channel For Your WiFi Network

Did anyone tell you yet that changing the Wi-Fi channel can literally increase or decrease the internet speed you are experiencing? No? Then let me share the real fact with you. It is true that if you are using a different channel in the Wi-Fi router, then you can actually increase the internet connection speed.

It is possible because of a technical phenomena which work in the background and also responsible for the existence of Wi-Fi network. Firstly, every router uses a specific bandwidth, also called Frequency Bands. Most of the routers use the 2.4GHz band which offers total 14 different channels.

Now, the default channel selected is always used by every other router in your local area. So, the channel is conflicted with heavy traffic and thus you don’t experience the best speed possible.

Even if you set the channel selection thing on automation, then still there are chances that the channel being used gets matched with few other routers in the range.

How to Find Best WiFi Channel?

In order to find the best WiFi channel available in your area, you need to make use of certain software. I will be writing about the two popular platforms over here, Windows and Linux, i.e., the best software available to serve this special purpose.

Once you start using such software then it scans every available WiFi connection in your local area, of course, the ones in the range and then it finds out the channels being used by each of them. After that, using its filtration algorithms, it recommends you the list of the channel which are used by a lesser number of users.

Easy, huh? Now, the only thing left to know is the best software you can use. So, here I start with that thing.

For Windows Platform

In case of Windows platform, the two most helpful and popular software in this niche is Wi-Fi Inspector and WifiInfoView. Both software does the work in a pretty cool way. The first one offers a complicated UI but very good results while the second one offers simple results in a simple UI.

Download any of them (I’ve linked the downloading website with their name) and install it. Their installation is simple and just like any other Windows software. Double-click on the installer file, click on Run option and go through on screen instructions, i.e., accepting the licence agreement and clicking on Next, Next, buttons till you reach the Finish one.

Once your choice of WiFi searching software is running, make a search/scan and you will have the data, ready at your end.

For Linux Platform

Even if you haven’t used Linux platform, then it doesn’t mean that no one uses it. It is still the second best OS platform and it is widely used by software developers. So, if you are also using a version of Linux operating system, then consider using below mentioned software application.

WiFi Radar is the application name and it is available for almost every possible Linux package provider, i.e., the versions. It offers simple UI and does the work at a good speed.

Simply grab its installation package, start installing it and once it’s running, proceed with the screen instructions and you will soon have a list that will help you find the best channel to select.

Since you are using Linux OS, I am pretty sure that you are aware of the installation process that one has to go through in order to install and run a new application. That’s why I am not describing it here because you don’t need any help there. Start using the WiFi Radar now!

For Mac Platform

Not to forget our Mac users, this part is going to help them. Luckily then don’t need to install any application because the feature we need is already included in the core operating system.

  1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon on the top bar. It is available on right-hand side.
  2. Click on ‘Open Wireless Diagnostics’ option and wait till the related program opens up.
  3. Move into ‘Wireless Diagnostics’ tab and select the network you want to know the channel details.

After going through on-screen options, and scanning all the available networks, you will find the details of channels and frequency bands being used by every WiFi network found by the application.

What to do next?

Now, since you are aware of the channels mostly used by every other router in your local area, you can set the channel which is used by least number of routers.

To change the channel being used and reconfigure the connection, you need to login into the admin area of the router. Generally, this setting options are opened by entering the IP used by the router (mostly it is 192.168.x.x) and then entering the login ID and password (the router manual will provide these details).

Over there, you will find the setting to change the channel in the Advanced setup section. Now, its exact position depends on the manufacturer, so you need to find it yourself. Check out all the options there. I promise it won’t be any tougher than it looks. But, don’t change any setting there unless you are sure of what it does.

Lastly, if you want to make a search for similar software on your own, then they are commonly named as ‘WiFi channel search software’. Or you can call it yourself.

So, that’s it, guys! I hope you find this guide helpful and going to share it with your friends. After all, it will help them all to increase the WiFi internet speed. But, make sure you don’t share it with your local area friends. If you know what I mean!
