Change Gmail Blue back to the Standard Look

On 1st April 2013, Google released Gmail blue. They then released a video to tell Gmail users about Gmail blue. Among the things they said, one was that Gmail blue was faster than the standard Gmail and offered more performance. However, that part was not true. Actually it was just an April fool’s day prank. Gmail Blue is real, but it doesn’t make Gmail any faster or improve performance. All it does is change the color and appearance of Gmail. It doesn’t even alter anything on the interface.

Basically, Gmail Blue is just a simple extension that is added to the browser. The browser applicable in this case is only Chrome, Google’s very own. Gmail Blue converts almost everything in Gmail to different shades of blue. It will add some element of change and fanciness in your Gmail experience, but some of you may still find it uncomfortable to work with. In this tutorial article, I will show you how to revert Gmail Blue back to the Standard look of Gmail. For those who do not have Gmail Blue and want to test it on your chrome browsers, I will show you how easy it is to do it.

Changing Gmail from Blue

In order to revert your Gmail back to the standard look, follow the guidelines I have given below.

  1. To open where Chrome’s extensions are,Google-Chrome-Extensions
  • Go to OPTIONS
  • Open SETTINGS
  • Click on EXTENSIONS
  1. Here, you will see a list of all the Extensions that are in your Chrome browser, whether enabled or disabled.Disable-Enable-or-Delete-Gmail-Blue

Scroll down and you will see an extension with the name ‘GOOGLE BLUE’.

However, in some newer versions of Google Blue, the Extension has been renamed to ‘Gmail Blue April Fool’s Joke’.

Below it is a label, ‘Changes Gmail to Gmail Blue’.

  1. Beside the extension, you will see two options.
  1. Enabled.

This option has a check box before it. Enabled means that the extension is currently active and is running in your browser.

To disable the extension, uncheck the box.

If you are using an older version of Google Chrome, it may ask you to restart your browser.

With newer versions of Chrome, you just need to reload your Gmail.

For both cases, Gmail should change back to the standard look.

  1. Trash Can Icon

When you move your cursor to the icon, the trash can opens and shows a label ‘Remove from Chrome’.

While the check box (as discussed above) just temporarily disables Gmail Blue till you wish to switch it back on, this icon deletes Gmail Blue completely.

Once you tap the Trash Can icon, you will see a pop up dialog box named ‘Confirm Removal’ with the prompt, ‘Remove Gmail Blue?’ or for newer versions, ‘Remove Gmail Blue April Fool’s Joke?’

Confirm removal by clicking ‘Remove’.

Gmail Blue extension should disappear completely.

Reload Gmail or your browser.

Your Gmail should have reverted back to the Original look.

Restoring/ Installing Gmail Blue

For those who would like to experiment with Gmail Blue, or If you have deleted Gmail Blue and want to restore it, you can just follow these simple instructions on how to do it.

  1. Open your Google Chrome browser.
  2. Go to OPTIONS, then open SETTINGS.
  3. On the top left corner, just below the title ‘Chrome’, you will see four menu items.
  1. History
  2. Extensions
  3. Settings
  4. About
  1. Open Extensions.
  2. Here, you will see a list of all the extensions available in your browser, together with their icons.
  3. Scroll down to the last extension and you will see a link ‘Get more extensions’, with the official Google Chrome’s icon. Open the link.
  4. That link will take you to the official Chrome Web Store.

On the top left corner, just below the title, there’s a Search Box, with a blinking cursor. Type ‘Gmail Blue’ and click search, or just press the Enter Button on your keyboard.

  1. Chrome Web Appstore brings diverse results, including apps. On the top left side, tap the ‘Extensions’ button.
  2. The Web Store now filters the search results to extensions.

Gmail Blue or Gmail Blue April fool’s Joke is most probably the first result.

Check below it, if it has the Label, ‘Changes Gmail to Gmail Blue’, just to be sure it’s the one.

  1. Tap to Open it. You will see an option on the top right side, ‘Add to Chrome’. Click on it.
  2. You will see a pop up asking if you are sure to install Gmail blue to Chrome. Click on the ‘Add Extension’ button.
  3. After a quick ‘Checking’ you will get a notification that tells you that Gmail blue has been added to your browser.

To confirm the addition, open the extensions page as explained earlier.

You can now reload Gmail or your browser.

Gmail should have turned to Gmail Blue.

Blue theme Cases.

In some cases, when you want to uninstall Gmail Blue from your browser using the procedure given earlier on, you may fail to find the Gmail Blue extension on your browser. This means that the blue color in your Gmail is not Gmail Blue. It is just a blue Gmail theme.

Since that maybe the problem with some people, I will show you how to remove the Gmail blue theme and use any of your desired theme.

  1. Open Gmail and go to the inbox page.
  2. On the top right hand side, you will see a Settings Icon that looks just like a gear wheel. Tap on it to open a drop down menu.
  3. Select the ‘Themes’ option.
  4. Here, you will be given many choices to choose a theme from. Choose any of your preferred themes.
  5. Click save to save it.

You can also access these themes by going to ‘SETTINGS’.

Here, you will find a sub menu of options. The last one is ‘Themes’.

After clicking the button, you will be given a link labelled, ‘Choose a new Theme’.

Open the link and choose a theme, then Save it.

Enjoy your new theme.
